What this recall means for you
Big Agnes is recalling approximately 6,200 Scout 2 and Scout 4 ultralight backpacking tents after 34 reports of the factory-sealed rain fly seam delaminating during heavy rain events, allowing water to pour through the seam directly into the tent interior. The seam failure creates a significant hypothermia risk for backpackers, mountaineers, and overnight campers caught in unexpected storms at elevation, where wet conditions combined with wind can rapidly drop core body temperature below safe levels. The delamination occurs when the polyurethane waterproofing layer separates from the fabric backing at the seam tape, which can happen with minimal use in high-humidity environments. The tents were sold at REI, Backcountry.com, and bigagnes.com from April 2023 through November 2024. Hikers and campers who own a Scout 2 or Scout 4 tent should not use it as their sole shelter during rainy conditions until the rain fly has been professionally resealed or a replacement fly received. The product works correctly in dry weather, but relying on it in a storm without verifying the seam integrity could result in dangerous wet and cold conditions inside the tent.
What to do next
- Locate the model number on the product label — usually inside the collar, on the waist belt, or on the tent stuff sack tag
- Confirm your unit is affected by checking the model number and date code against the recall list at CPSC.gov
- Remove the recalled gear from service immediately and do not use it in any situation where equipment failure could cause injury or death
- Contact the manufacturer directly using the phone number or website on the recall notice — most recalls offer free repair, replacement, or refund
- Register your product on the manufacturer recall page to receive notifications and confirm your eligibility for compensation
- If you purchased the product from a retailer, also keep your receipt as many manufacturers require proof of purchase for refunds on older items
Recall data
| Brand | Big Agnes |
|---|---|
| Product | Scout 2 and Scout 4 ultralight backpacking tents, model BCSCOUT2 and BCSCOUT4 |
| Deaths Reported | None reported |

| Remedy | Contact Big Agnes at 1-800-555-0147 or bigagnes.com/recall for a free replacement rain fly. Until the replacement arrives, test the rain fly by running water over all seams with a garden hose to check for leaks — any seepage indicates an affected unit. Do not use the tent as your primary shelter during rain events without first confirming seam integrity. Store the tent completely dry between trips to prevent further seam degradation. |
