How to Verify Your Home Safety Equipment

Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and other home safety equipment should be checked against official recall databases every 6 months or whenever you install new batteries. Even if your device is not on a current recall list, the CPSC recommends replacing smoke detectors that are more than 10 years old, as the sensor elements degrade over time and may fail to detect smoke or carbon monoxide.

If you find a recalled product in your home, stop using it immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free replacement or repair. Register your products with the manufacturer so you are notified of any future recalls.
