What this recall means for you

Approximately 1.4 million Kidde TruForce model SM120X (hardwired) and SM120XDC (hardwired with battery backup) smoke detectors manufactured between March 2015 and December 2021 are being recalled after consumer reports confirmed the devices failed to properly detect smoke during active fire conditions. Testing by the Consumer Product Safety Commission found that a manufacturing defect in the sensing chamber allows smoke to pass through without triggering the alarm, creating a serious risk of injury or death for households relying on these detectors. Affected units were sold at major home improvement retailers nationwide from April 2015 through November 2021. The recall affects units with model numbers SM120X and SM120XDC, and consumers should verify the model and date code on the back label before continued use. This defect is particularly dangerous because smoke alarms are a home's primary line of defense against fire, and a failed unit gives residents no warning to evacuate, dramatically increasing the risk of injury or death.
